The Spencer-Okoboji Time Bank is the entry in the 2013 Dream Big Grow Here Competition with the potential to affect every member of our greater Spencer/Lakes community. If you vote once per day, every day, let us know and you will earn a time credit for your time and effort.
The Spencer-Okoboji Time Bank is a part of the national organization TimeBanks USA. Time Banking promotes equality and builds caring community economies through the exchanges of time and talents. In Time Banks, members earn one time credit for every hour of help they provide to others. Time Banks build networks of giving and receiving that reduce social isolation, generate trust, and build resiliency.
The other piece about time banking is it's not just about transactions. It's about group gatherings. We will have monthly birthday parties. We have community projects. We do winterization or environmental work 'cause people really sometimes feel most comfortable getting to know each other on a project and then they'll ask each other to make an exchange.
Many people in the Lakes have more time than money. Some have neither, but it's not giving away more of your time -- you get it back when you use your time credit for something another member of the community is gifted to create for you.
Time Banking's Core Values:
Everyone is an asset
Some work is beyond a monetary price
Reciprocity in helping
Social networks are necessary
A respect for all human beings
The mission of an individual time bank influences exactly which services are offered. In some places, time banking is adopted as a means to strengthen the community as a whole. Other time banks are more oriented towards social service, systems change, and helping underprivileged groups. In some time banks, both are acknowledged goals.
What's in it for me?
How the TimeBank will benefit you: by trading services and items, you have what your family needs, and can save money for fixed expenses like rent/mortgage and utilities. Or you can save more or donate more or have something you really want.
With Time Credits, why do you need $5,000 -- much less $15,000?
The $5,000 will help us immensely to get the word out as well as have a memorable theatrical event for our launch. Anyone helping with the event will earn a wealth of time credits, and anyone attending the launch will start out with a time credit worth one hour. We will tithe at least 10% to a cause that helps the needy in our area and help create a sustainable community.
I will even give the other competitors some publicity right here!
As of 10/22/2013 there are 13 competitors in the Iowa Lakes Corridor Dream Big Grow Here competition. I would invite ANY of these entrepreneurs to contact me and I would be happy to profile them here in this blog. I am not seeing where there is any plan for this paper or its neighbors (Storm Lake and Spirit Lake), nor the radio stations to profile us, and not everyone has the media platforms I have, so I would love to do this to help all of us succeed in the field.
