Original Theater Right Here!Posted Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at 1:20 PM
If you haven't yet been to the Curiel Reynolds School of Visual Arts, you are missing out in a big way. Just when I was looking around Spencer despairing of ever feeling we could ever be a real arts and cultural destination, even for Iowa, I attended a networking meeting for entrepreneurs and artists held at the school. It was a fantastic experience having all those creative and inventive minds in one place along with the Lakes Corridor of Opportunity. There is so much hidden talent in this area that needs to come out, and so much known talent that should be known better. All of us artists are struggling right now, just like everyone else in this economy. You may think art is not vital when we're going without so much of what just a few years ago was basic to us -- jobs and money might top the list. Ask your soul its reaction to never hearing anything but arguing and doom and gloom on the radio and TV -- no music, no story, no vision, no sound of glory. Ask your eyes how they would react to seeing only the stark relief of reality -- no paintings, no sculpture, no cartoons or portraits, no pictures in mosaic or glass. Ask your imagination how it would feel living without the experience of life presented in a new way on a stage or a movie screen. Ask your mind how it would feel if asked to stop imagining. Ask your legs how they would feel if asked to never dance again. Art does create jobs, creates vibrancy, creates life -- the arts are worth an equal share of your time and energy. With the diversity of arts organizations, why did I start this blog with a shameless plug for the Curiel School? Because, believe it or not, they have the capacity to support the performing arts. The old Reynolds School auditorium is a space ready to be filled -- with actors, with a spare set just to spark the imagination -- with audience members ready to see something new. What is new? My play, "The Feast of Jovi Bono," rewritten since last read by some of you and featuring ten actors -- really anyone who fits the gender and approximate age of the character -- for a reading sometime this summer -- we are still working on details. I will provide yummy snacks and an audience discussion will also take place directly afterward. My playwriting ventures have a new website http://themoreyoushowme.com/ if you would like to know more. If you are on Facebook, you can also "friend" Jovi Bono to learn more about the character development and other great tidbits. I hope to see you there, on stage or in the audience. Whether on stage or in the audience, you can be part of creation from the destruction the past few years have brought. I'll be there!
The Curiel school is also adding a fashion design program to their fall offerings.
The Spencer Community Theatre has become so successful and structured, it isn't easy for new playwrites to be given the opportunity to showcase a play there. I'm glad there is another outlet in the community!
By the way, I like your blog.
