Coffee?
The Spencer Community Theatre is putting on another show -- a show that provides a new beginning right from the start. Soon things heat up and it's obvious something's cooking. There's woods and a stream and a wild bird, a nosy shopkeeper, a convict, a love story, a raucous essay contest and a surprise silent guest.

The story is told through musical styles from folk to country to rock to classic show tune styles and sung richly by each member of the cast and fully orchestrated by local musicians.

Tickets are on sale now at SCT 712-262-7336. Pull up a chair and see a new girl in town, an old secret, a buried past and swelling hope come to life at the Events Center.

Speaking of swelling hope and new life -- to anyone who might be turning thirty, it's been my experience that the thirties are so much better than the twenties. More secure, less angsty, coming into your own, seeing some of the way ahead and being free yet rooted -- if that makes any sense.

You can take better care of yourself now. You can use a more sparkly, fascinating vocabulary. You can feel more confident in your knowledge and converse with almost everyone. You have lived long enough to know that nothing -- pain, weight gain, tension with friends or spouse -- nothing lasts forever, this too shall pass. You have (I hope) friendships that have lasted 20 years and more. You, hopefully, can see your parental figures and others of the previous generations as multi-dimensional people and relate to them as a peer.

The thing I've liked best about my thirties is knowing who I am enough to actually create things -- good things, I think.

That's the part I look forward to even more in my forties (which are still a short distance away, thank you very much!)

Can I warm that up for you?
