What you really want to do is direct!Posted Monday, January 11, 2010, at 11:23 AM
The Feast of Jovi Bono It's a fun play. If you've ever wanted to try directing, here's an opportunity with a small time commitment, lots of help from the playwright (me) and the chance to meet some great people in the arts here in Spencer. What's going on? I'm having a staged reading of my new play through the Spencer Community Theatre around early March, 2010. I need a director to help guide the process and put the show together. Basically, I need someone besides me to have some input as I'm probably too close to the work to have a completely clear head about how to do get it to stage. It's a very small time commitment -- you meet with me once, we meet with the SCT people once, we have ONE rehearsal and you hang out with me the night of the staged reading. If you've ever wanted to try something like this, it's a way to dip your toe in. What's a staged reading? Volunteer actors get up on stage with the script on music stands and read the parts. We have an audience who takes it all in. We have a brief break, then everyone comes back and the audience gets to dump on my work, err, provide valuable feedback. This will help me do yet another rewrite and hopefully get it good enough for a mainstage production and to win some tasty playwriting competitions. Why would I want to direct your play? It's fun, you get to meet new people, you have a new experience to add to your bucket list, and you may be more confident to direct a full length work in the future, or just to step out and attempt some other adventure that's been seeking you in your dreams. The biggest perk -- when I step up to accept my Tony Award for Best New Play in a few years, I'll mention you on stage. Whoopi Goldberg, Neil Patrick Harris and the whole theatre world will hear your name. So, back to the real world, maybe I'll direct your show.. Great! Shoot me an email and we'll get together to talk about it. Wait...isn't it the play that the one guy couldn't get past Page 8? http://www.spencerdailyreporter.com/blog... Yes, yes it is. It was. It's almost completely rewritten and I hope to see Mr. Page 8 beaming in the audience, watching what he missed in his first reading. In fact, Mr. Page 8, if you're out there -- ever wanted to direct a play? |
