Courage

Posted Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at 10:15 AM

Our son is in 8th grade and is out for track. I love track. I was a sprinter. He is a hurdler. Because of his participation we have the privelege of attending each and every one of the Jr. High track meets. Every week is filled with inspiring moments. A runner finishes last but finishes. I sprinter runs her best time ever and throws her hands in the air with exultation. A hurdler falls but gets up and continues to cheers of encouragement from the crowd. A distance runner misses his goal time by 2 hundredeths of a second but vows to do better next week. A high jumper clears the bar that is set taller than he stands. Most of these athletes are first timers. Some will continue their quest for personal greatness and others will try other athletic endeavors but they all have one thing in common...courage. Courage to brave grueling practices, courage to try something new, courage to finish the season and always, always the courage to be part of something bigger than themselves. Check the school calendar and catch a meet. They're free, fun and inspirational.

Catch the Little Tiger Relays on Mon., May 10 at 1:30P. 5th & 6th graders throughout the city will compete against each other in track and field events for the first time.

P.S. Way to Go Lexi!

I always liked participating in track. I know some parents don't because some track meets can last a LONG time (ahem, Spirit Lake...) and some of them at the beginning of the season can chill you to the bone, but I enjoy watching them too.

Anything at all. I was raised on the same farm on which my dad was born. My parents still live there today. I graduated from Eastwood High in 1987 and from Eastern Wyoming College with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1989. I married Randy 19 long years ago and we have 6 children ranging in age from 3 to 18 years old. I have worked numerous jobs from detassling as a teenager, a legal secretary in California, church secretary in Iowa to a daycare provider now. I love being outside and hate doing women stuff inside. I would rather mow the lawn than do dishes or change the tire on my van than sort socks. I am patriotic, opinionated and sometimes loud. I am also a great mom, good friend and I love to laugh - I did marry Randy. I believe in common sense versus reading a book by some "expert". I don't pretend to have all the answers but I am willing to ask the questions that others are afraid to ask and sometimes to my detriment say the things that others only think about saying. I try to avoid confrontation but sometimes it finds me and almost all the time it is necessary to stimulate communication.
