What do you think of veterans as terrorists?Posted Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at 9:15 AM
Just wanting to know local reaction to the New Homeland Security report about our veterans as terrorists that we should be aware of? My grandfather, uncles, father, all three brothers and two nephews are or will be veterans. None of them would ever consider a terrorist act.

Anything at all.
I was raised on the same farm on which my dad was born. My parents still live there today. I graduated from Eastwood High in 1987 and from Eastern Wyoming College with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1989. I married Randy 19 long years ago and we have 6 children ranging in age from 3 to 18 years old. I have worked numerous jobs from detassling as a teenager, a legal secretary in California, church secretary in Iowa to a daycare provider now. I love being outside and hate doing women stuff inside. I would rather mow the lawn than do dishes or change the tire on my van than sort socks. I am patriotic, opinionated and sometimes loud. I am also a great mom, good friend and I love to laugh - I did marry Randy. I believe in common sense versus reading a book by some "expert". I don't pretend to have all the answers but I am willing to ask the questions that others are afraid to ask and sometimes to my detriment say the things that others only think about saying. I try to avoid confrontation but sometimes it finds me and almost all the time it is necessary to stimulate communication.

Leah, I tend to lean left, but I am also alarmed by this report, not only because my father served in the military on some level for thirty years, including active duty in the Pacific Rim, and the soldier's circle in a certain South Dakota cemetery is filled with my ancestors, but also because it was simply not well thought out.
Why would they single out veterans as being prone to violent extremism? They don't back up the claim with statistics and cite Timothy McVeigh as their single case in point -- a uniquely disturbed individual who was terrorist in an attack that took place 14 years ago.
I think this report exposes a dangerously naivety and willingness -- at the highest levels of government -- to buy into the Hollywood portrayal of veterans as disaffected, disgruntled, and damaged goods waiting to explode on a vulnerable homeland.
I still love Barack Obama and believe with all my heart that he has our nation's best interest in mind, that he understands its citizens who struggle and has the intellect and conviction to make change happen.
Yet, there are mistakes from his administration that cannot be denied. It's hard to say how much of it has to do with him. I was disappointed that he filled his posts with so many Clinton era has-beens or never-weres and I wonder if some of the gaffes have come from those choices.
