NEW BOWL PROJECTIONS FOR IOWA, ISUPosted Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at 12:53 PM
FIRST IOWA
Here's what we know: The winner of Saturday's Iowa-Ohio State game (2:30 p.m. - ABC) is the Big 10 Conference's automatic representative to the Bowl Championship Series, which means the Rose Bowl in most years. A week ago, all of the national sports Web sites were projecting Iowa to Pasadena and a date with Oregon, the Pac 10 representative. After the Northwestern loss, Ricky Stanzi's injury, and a trip to Columbus on the horizon they're all projecting Ohio State to face the Ducks instead. Those same Web sites seem to put the Hawkeyes on the bubble to get an at-large BCS berth. Again, these projections assume an Iowa loss at Ohio State. Here's the rundown as of Monday night: * CBS -- Capital One Bowl, Jan. 1 in Orlando, vs LSU * ESPN (Mark Schlaback) -- Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Jan. 4, in Glendale, Ariz., vs TCU * ESPN (Bruce Feldman) -- Capital One Bowl vs. Auburn * Sports Illustrated (Stewart Mandel) -- Orange Bowl, Jan. 5, in Miami vs Georgia Tech * Sporting News (Matt Hayes) -- Fiesta Bowl vs. Boise State * MSNBC/College Football Talk -- Capital One Bowl vs. LSU * FOX/Scout.com -- Fiesta Bowl vs. USC A two-loss USC and the undefeated non-BCS schools (TCU and Boise State) appear to be the biggest road blocks for Iowa to land an at-large BCS spot. If a Big 12 north division team upsets Texas in the conference championship game, the Longhorns would likely take an at-large spot out of the pool as well. NOW, IOWA STATE The Cyclones showed up in many of the bowl projections as well. In fact they were spotted more this week than they were last week before the loss to Oklahoma State. Most Web sites think the Big 12 will have more bowl-eligible teams than spots available. In their projections, the analysts have Iowa State filling at-large spots in other bowls. At 5-5 overall, the Cyclones need one more win to be bowl eligible. The home game against Colorado this week is probably their best shot. They travel to Missouri in two weeks. Here's a look: * CBS -- Staying home. * ESPN (Mark Schlaback) -- Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, Dec. 26, in Detroit, vs. Northern Illinois, in place of a Big 10 team. * ESPN (Bruce Feldman) -- Roady's Humanitarian Bowl Dec. 30, in Boise, Idaho, vs. Idaho, in place of a Mountain West team. * Sports Illustrated (Stewart Mandel) -- GMAC Bowl, Jan. 6, in Mobile, Ala., vs. Ohio, in place of an ACC team. * Sporting News (Matt Hayes) -- Only did BCS projections. * MSNBC/College Football Talk -- Roady's Humanitarian Bowl vs. Idaho * FOX/Scout.com -- New Mexico Bowl, Dec. 19, in Albuquerque vs. Fresno State, in place of a Mountain West team. I'm a general assignment reporter and online contributor for The Daily Reporter in Spencer.
I grew up, went to school and entered the work force right here in Spencer. And no matter where I was in life, I liked to read my local newspaper.
My break in journalism came in the fall of 1997. The Daily Reporter's Sports Editor Steve Clark left early on in the football season for another opportunity. General assignment reporters tried to corral the sports results while they searched for Mr. Clark's replacement. In the meantime, I saw an ad for a "sports stringer" without fully knowing what a "stringer" was. I put together a "Pigskin Preview" (the Friday morning high school football preview column) for a writing sample.
They let me pick up some of the slack part-time with cross country stories and football coverage for the smaller schools. I began helping more and more.
Long story short, they found Mr. Clark's successor, but that guy didn't make it past Thanksgiving. By then, I had enough practice and demonstrated enough ability to become the sports editor. I then slipped into a general assignment position when it opened up in 1998.
I've been on the news side, covering six counties for three different publications, for more than 10 years now. It all came from an interest in writing, some good timing and, hopefully, a bit of ability. I'll let you be the judge of that.
The Mitchell Report will include views on current events, sports and pop culture.

Rivals, through Yahoo! Sports, just put out a projection as well: They have the Hawkeyes playing LSU in the Capital One Bowl and Iowa State staying home.
